Roasting Methods MOC

Roasting method refers to both the equipment type used to apply heat and the approach to controlling heat transfer throughout the roast. The primary equipment categories — drum, fluid-bed, and hybrid — each deliver different ratios of conductive, convective, and radiant heat, which in turn shapes how flavour develops. Profile approach (the sequence of temperatures and airflow decisions across the roast) operates within the constraints of the equipment chosen. This MOC maps equipment types, heat transfer mechanisms, and profile methodologies.

Deep Dives

Article What it covers
Drum roasters The dominant commercial roaster type: rotating drum, primarily conductive and convective heat
Fluid-bed (air) roasters Air-driven roasters with predominantly convective heat transfer
Hybrid roasters Roasters combining drum and air elements
Sample roasters Small-capacity roasters for green coffee evaluation
Home coffee roasters Consumer-grade equipment options and their trade-offs
Heat Transfer in Coffee Roasting Conduction, convection, and radiation in the roasting context
Roast Profile What a roast profile is and how it is constructed
Roast Phases The stages of a roast and what happens at each
