Ecuador MOC¶
Ecuador is a small but rapidly developing specialty coffee origin in the equatorial Andes, producing Arabica at altitudes up to 2,300 metres in its southern highlands and cloud forest zones alongside commercial Robusta on the Pacific coast. The country's unusual equatorial position combined with its extreme altitude range creates near-year-round production at the national level — a biological anomaly that makes Ecuador distinct from almost every other Arabica origin. The specialty story is concentrated in three zones: Loja Province in the far south (Ecuador's premier specialty terroir, producing bright, complex high-altitude Arabica), the Intag cloud forest of the northwestern Andes (shade-grown, organic-certified smallholder coffee from a globally significant biodiversity hotspot), and the emerging Amazon foothill zone of Zamora Chinchipe. Ecuador's inaugural Cup of Excellence in 2021 confirmed the country's international specialty credentials. This MOC maps Ecuadorian coffee from the national overview through the three main producing regions.
