Overview¶
The Intag cloud forest zone in the northwestern Andes — spanning parts of Imbabura and Carchi provinces — is Ecuador's second internationally recognised specialty coffee region. Coffee is grown at 1,400–2,000 metres within a globally significant cloud forest biodiversity hotspot, by smallholder communities organised primarily through the AACRI cooperative (Asociación Agro-Artesanal de Caficultores Río Intag). Intag coffee has a strong ethical and environmental narrative: the region has been the focus of sustained community resistance to large-scale copper mining concessions that would destroy the cloud forest, and its shade-grown, organic-certified Arabica is positioned as an economic alternative to mining that preserves both biodiversity and farmer livelihoods. The cup profile — floral, fruity, and clean — reflects the cloud forest microclimate and the predominantly shade-grown cultivation conditions.
Geography and Terrain¶
The Intag valley system is located on the western slopes of the Cotacachi volcano and the Western Cordillera in northwestern Andes, approximately 100 km north of Quito. Elevations range from approximately 1,200 to 2,200 metres, with coffee cultivated between 1,400 and 2,000 metres. The western Andes slope toward the Pacific receives significantly more moisture than the inter-Andean valley, with annual rainfall of 1,500–2,500 mm. The cloud forest cover — dense, mossy, and biologically diverse — creates permanent cloud and mist conditions that moderate temperature and provide moisture during dry periods. Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve, adjacent to the Intag growing zone, is one of Ecuador's most biodiverse protected areas.
Farming Systems¶
Smallholder cultivation by local mestizo and indigenous Kichwa communities on plots of 1–3 hectares, predominantly integrated into the cloud forest landscape. AACRI (est. 1998) is the primary cooperative, organising approximately 1,000 families in the Intag valley. Shade-grown cultivation under native cloud forest canopy is standard; organic farming practices are widespread, and AACRI holds organic and fair-trade certifications. Coffee intercropped with sugar cane, fruit trees, and food crops.
Processing¶
Washed processing at cooperative wet mills. Cherry is depulped, fermented, washed, and dried on patios or raised beds. AACRI operates processing infrastructure at the cooperative level, with some individual farm-level processing by non-AACRI producers.
Varieties¶
Typica is the historically dominant variety, associated with the most complex Intag lots. Caturra is widely planted for productivity. Bourbon is present on some farms. The cloud forest canopy and lower-input cultivation create conditions where variety character is well-expressed.
Cup Profile¶
Intag AACRI washed Typica (1,600–2,000 m): floral (jasmine, elderflower), tropical fruit (guava, papaya), mild citrus, honey sweetness; light-medium body; delicate, clean finish. The cloud forest microclimate — persistent moisture, filtered light, moderate temperatures — is evident in the soft, aromatic complexity. SCA 82–86 for standard lots; top lots 86–88.
