Yemen MOC

Yemen occupies a unique and irreplaceable position in coffee history: it is the birthplace of coffee cultivation, the source of the global Arabica trade, and the origin from which all Typica-lineage Arabica outside Ethiopia traces its genetics. Coffee has been grown on Yemen's ancient stone-terraced mountain slopes at 1,500–2,500 metres since at least the 15th century, using traditional natural processing methods unchanged for centuries and from heirloom varieties identified only by local names tied to specific villages and terraces. The resulting cup — heavy body, wine-like acidity, dried fruit, spice, dark chocolate — is one of the world's most distinctive and recognisable profiles. The country's civil conflict since 2015 has severely disrupted the sector while simultaneously elevating Yemen's speciality premiums to among the world's highest. This MOC maps Yemeni coffee knowledge from the national overview through the four main growing regions.
