African Coffee Origins¶
Africa is the birthplace of coffee and home to some of the world's most distinctive and complex coffees. This MOC organises African coffee by country, from Ethiopia's wild heirloom diversity to Kenya's blackcurrant brightness, from Rwanda's surging export renaissance to Yemen's ancient traditions under pressure from ongoing conflict.

2025 Production Update: Ethiopia's 2024/25 harvest is forecast at 8.5 million bags (a 500,000-bag increase YoY), driven by ideal rainfall and on-cycle conditions in Sidamo and Yirgacheffe. The 2025/26 season is projected to set a record at 11.6 million bags (694,000 tonnes), up 9%, as over 450,000 hectares have been replanted with improved varieties. Variety Note: The SL in SL28 and SL34 stands for Scott Agricultural Laboratories, which developed these varieties in the 1930s. SL28 is prized for its drought resistance and exceptional cup — complex blackcurrant, citrus, and berry. Green coffee is graded by screen size: E (Elephant), PB (Peaberry), AA, AB, C, TT, T, MH/ML. 2025 Production Update: Rwanda's coffee sector is on a record trajectory. Production rose 25% in 2024/25 to 21,295 tonnes, with export revenues surging 47% to $116.1 million. In 2025, exports grew a further 39% to 23,860 tonnes, generating a historic $148.6 million — well ahead of the 2029 national target of $160 million. Current Status (2025): Coffee cultivation in Yemen dates to approximately 1450 CE — the world's first commercially cultivated and traded coffee. Today, Yemen's coffee sector faces severe disruption from the civil war that began in 2015. Export volumes have nearly halved since 2014. Despite conflict, Yemen's specialty coffees command extraordinary prices: at the Best of Yemen 2024 auction, the average price reached $369/kg and the top lot sold for a record $1,159/kg.
