Getting Started with This Guide to Coffee¶
%%
Two Types of Entries¶
The Guide has two types of entries:
- Maps of Content (MOCs) and
- Atomic Notes
1. Maps of Content (MOCs) — Maps of Content are used for topics that have a lot of detail, so instead of having one very long page, the topic is broken down into "sections", and each section is a separate entry which is linked to from the MoC. So the MoC is a "Navigation hub" that contains links to related files. A MOC doesn't try to tell you everything about a topic; it organises the topic and points you to the right atomic notes. For example, Coffee Grinders MOC links to everything about grinders without itself being a grinder encyclopedia.
2. Atomic Notes — Individual files that go deep on a single concept. For example, ../Maps of Content/Grind Size MOC covers grind size specifically, with detail you won't find in a MOC. Use MOCs to navigate, use atomic notes for knowledge.
Regardless of the type of entry, all entries contain links to other related entries, so you can travel through this guide with little regard to the type of entry you are jumping too. However if you are searching for a particular topic, I recommend trying the MoC first to get an overview of the subject, but this is just my recommendation to avoid getting lost in the weeds. Other ways of navigating include: - using the full list of files on the left of the screen, or - using the Search Tool at the top of that list.
The search tool and the file index on the left-hand side of the screen are useful for finding atomic notes that aren't surfaced in any MOC you've visited yet.

MOC Navigation Tips¶
How to move through the vault:
- Start broad — A MOC overview gives you context before diving into detail
- Go deep — Click links to atomic notes for the full picture on any concept
- Cross-reference — Follow the "Related MOCs" links at the bottom of each file
- Return to the MOC — Use it as your navigation hub, not a one-time read
- Use search — Atomic notes on niche topics may not be surfaced in any MOC
When to use which type of page:
| You want to… | Go to… |
|---|---|
| Learn a topic from scratch | Start with the relevant MOC |
| Troubleshoot a specific problem | Go to the Optimization/Troubleshooting MOC |
| Buy equipment | Go to the Equipment MOCs |
| Understand the science | Go to the Science MOCs |
| Look up one specific concept | Use search to find the atomic note directly |
