Overview

Small-batch roasting describes the practice of roasting coffee in batches of 1–15 kg, the operational scale characteristic of specialty micro-roasters who prioritise quality consistency and single-origin lot integrity over throughput. Small-batch roasters — using machines such as the Probat P5, Giesen W6A, or Diedrich IR-5 — can apply individualised roast profiles to small green lots that would be blended or homogenised at larger commercial scales. This roasting model supports the specialty sector's emphasis on traceability, seasonal offering changes, and producer relationship transparency, as each small lot is kept identifiably separate through the roasting and packaging process.
