Overview

Sample roasting is the practice of roasting small batches — typically 50–200 g — of green coffee in a dedicated sample roaster to evaluate cup quality before purchasing a full lot. The SCA cupping protocol requires that samples be roasted to a light-medium level (Agtron 58±1 whole bean, 63±1 ground) within a defined time window of 8–12 minutes to first crack, then rested 8–24 hours before cupping. Importers, exporters, and quality-focused roasters use sample roasting as the primary quality gate for green coffee procurement.
