Overview¶
New Oriente (Nuevo Oriente) is Guatemala's eastern highland coffee region, located in the Chiquimula, Jalapa, and Zacapa departments at altitudes of 1,300–1,700 metres. The region's distinctly red clay volcanic soils — derived from the eastern volcanic chain and weathered older basalts — produce a cup profile noticeably different from western Guatemala's origins: winey, honey-like sweetness, citrus, and a rounder, earthier acidity that reflects the eastern highlands' distinct geological and climatic context. New Oriente is less internationally prominent than Huehuetenango or Antigua but is a consistent Cup of Excellence participant, with the potential for complex specialty lots from its highest-altitude sub-zones.
Geography and Terrain¶
New Oriente encompasses the eastern highland departments of Chiquimula, Jalapa, and Zacapa, on the Pacific slope of the Sierra de las Minas and adjacent volcanic ranges. The terrain is drier than western Guatemala — the Pacific slope in eastern Guatemala receives less precipitation than the mountainous west — and the soils are characteristically red clay and volcanic, older and more weathered than the young pumice soils of Antigua or the active basalts of Fraijanes.
The Maya Ch'orti' indigenous community has traditional presence in Chiquimula, near the Copán Ruinas border with Honduras. The Copán archaeological site (Honduras) lies adjacent to this region.
Farming Systems¶
A mix of smallholder and medium-estate farming characterises New Oriente. Cooperative and private beneficios process cherry from surrounding farms. The eastern highland location, while more remote from Guatemala City than Antigua or Fraijanes, has adequate road infrastructure for commercial coffee export.
Processing¶
Washed processing is standard. The drier climate of the eastern highlands relative to western Guatemala facilitates outdoor drying operations. Honey processing is present in some specialty-oriented cooperatives; honey New Oriente lots show enhanced sweetness and fruit complexity.
Varieties¶
Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica are the primary varieties. The red clay volcanic soil creates a distinct interaction with the variety profiles that defines the regional character.
Cup Profile¶
New Oriente washed: winey, honey-like sweetness, citrus (blood orange, mandarin), mild earthy depth from the red clay soils, medium body, soft acidity. Less sharply defined in acidity than Huehuetenango or Atitlán; more rounded, rustic, and honey-adjacent. SCA 82–86 for quality lots; CoE finalists from higher-altitude sub-zones can reach 87–89.
