Overview¶
Kagera is Tanzania's northwestern coffee region, occupying the elevated terrain adjacent to Lake Victoria at altitudes of 1,100–1,500 metres. The zone produces both Arabica and Robusta, reflecting its position in the broader Lake Victoria basin where both species are cultivated — sharing geographic context with Uganda's Robusta heartland across the lake. Kagera is primarily a commercial-grade producing zone; the combination of lower altitude, Robusta production, and less developed quality infrastructure positions it as a volume contributor to Tanzania's national output rather than a specialty driver. The regional capital, Bukoba, is the main logistics hub.
Geography and Terrain¶
Kagera Region borders Lake Victoria to the east and Rwanda and Uganda to the west and north. The landscape is rolling plateau terrain at 1,100–1,500 metres, less dramatic in altitude variation than the northern volcanic zones or southern highland escarpments. The soils are older crystalline Ferralsols and Nitisols of the central African plateau, with lower inherent fertility than the volcanic Andosols of Kilimanjaro.
The climate is equatorial, with bimodal rainfall distributed more evenly through the year than in the more seasonal northern and southern highland zones. The Lake Victoria influence moderates temperatures and maintains humidity.
Farming Systems¶
Smallholder farming families cultivate both Arabica and Robusta on mixed plots. Cooperative structures operate at PCS level but with less investment in quality infrastructure than the northern cooperatives. The proximity to Uganda means that cross-border coffee movement has historically been a feature of the region's trade.
Processing¶
Arabica is typically wet/washed at cooperative CWS. Robusta is sun-dried as natural cherry. Processing quality is variable and generally below the standard of the northern and southern highland zones.
Varieties¶
A mix of local Arabica selections (Bourbon/Typica lineage) and Robusta. The Robusta material is similar in character to the lake-basin Robusta of Uganda's Kagera sub-zone.
Cup Profile¶
Kagera Arabica washed: mild, balanced; chocolate, stone fruit, moderate acidity; commercial quality. Kagera Robusta natural: earthy, woody, full body, low acidity; typical lake-basin commercial Robusta character. Both profiles are commercial-grade rather than specialty-oriented.
