Overview¶
El Paraíso is Honduras's southeastern coffee region, located in the El Paraíso Department along the Nicaraguan border at altitudes of 1,000–1,500 metres. The region forms the southeastern boundary of Honduras's six certified growing zones and benefits from both Caribbean and Pacific moisture systems that moderate the highland climate. El Paraíso coffees are characterised by a mild, chocolatey, nutty profile with soft acidity — among the most approachable and commercially accessible of Honduras's growing regions.
Geography and Terrain¶
El Paraíso Department borders the Nicaraguan departments of Nueva Segovia and Madriz to the south and east, creating a highland coffee corridor that extends into northwestern Nicaragua (the Jalapa and Dipilto valleys). The growing areas occupy the highland ranges along the border at 1,000–1,500 metres, with the Sierra del Paraíso and adjacent ranges providing the elevation and cooler temperatures necessary for Arabica cultivation.
The climate is influenced by both Caribbean moisture (wet season May–November) and the somewhat drier Pacific influence from the west; the combined effect produces moderate to high rainfall (1,200–1,600 mm annually) with a clear dry season that supports harvest logistics.
Farming Systems¶
Smallholder farming on 0.5–3 ha plots is the standard model. El Paraíso is served by cooperative and private beneficios; the region's proximity to the Nicaraguan border means some cross-border trade and processing relationships exist historically. IHCAFE extension services and cooperative development programmes operate in the region.
Processing¶
Washed processing at centralised beneficios is standard. The region's moderate climate supports reliable patio and raised-bed drying through the dry season.
Varieties¶
Caturra, Catuai, and Lempira (rust-resistant Catimor) are the primary varieties. Typica exists in older plantings.
Cup Profile¶
El Paraíso washed: mild, chocolatey, nutty; brown sugar, milk chocolate, mild citrus, soft low acidity, medium body. One of the most accessible and commercially oriented profiles in Honduras; well-suited to espresso blending and commercial filter applications. SCA 80–84 for standard lots; quality-focused farms can reach 85.
