Overview¶
Indigenous coffee producers — smallholder farmers and cooperatives whose land rights and cultural practices pre-date colonial land tenure systems — supply a significant proportion of the world's specialty coffee, particularly in Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru. Issues of land rights, intellectual property over traditional varieties, benefit-sharing from high-value lots, and equitable access to specialty premiums are particularly acute for indigenous communities, who frequently lack the legal infrastructure to assert ownership or negotiate directly with international buyers. The specialty coffee movement's direct trade model offers potential benefits for indigenous producers but also carries risks of exploitation if price transparency and contract terms are not structured to protect community interests.
