Overview

Labour practices in coffee production — covering wages, working conditions, child labour, freedom of association, and gender equality — are a significant ethical concern across major producing countries. While fair trade and direct trade models aim to improve labour conditions, independent verification is uneven and the informal, seasonal nature of coffee harvesting labour makes systematic improvement difficult. The specialty industry's premium pricing does not automatically translate to improved labour conditions without explicit supply chain commitments and monitoring.
