Overview

Peaberries occur in every coffee-growing country and in every variety of Arabica and Robusta. Not every origin sorts or markets them separately — dedicated peaberry production requires the sorting infrastructure, labour investment, and market demand to make it worthwhile. The following origins have the most developed peaberry traditions or the most significant specialty presence.


Tanzania — The Gold Standard

Tanzania has built more international brand recognition around peaberry than any other origin:

  • "Kilimanjaro Peaberry" is one of the most internationally recognised single-origin coffee designations
  • Actively sorted, graded, and marketed as PB grade at the Moshi auction
  • Found across all major Tanzanian growing regions: Kilimanjaro, Arusha, and Mbeya
  • The wine-like acidity, black currant, and complex fruit character of Tanzanian coffee translate powerfully in peaberry form
  • Premium: 20–50% over equivalent flat-bean grade

Kenya

  • Produced across all major regions — Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a
  • Separately graded as PB
  • Less prominently marketed than Tanzania but highly regarded by specialty buyers
  • Kenya peaberry expresses the characteristic phosphoric brightness and black currant with intensity

Hawaii (Kona)

  • Kona Peaberry is one of Hawaii's premium commercial designations
  • Higher price point than standard Kona Extra Fancy and Fancy grades
  • Very limited supply; commands among the highest peaberry premiums globally (30–60%+)
  • Smooth, balanced character with mild acidity and chocolate-nut notes typical of Kona
  • Strong domestic and export demand

Colombia (Caracol)

  • "Caracol" (Spanish for snail) describes the rounded bean shape
  • Found across all Colombian regions but inconsistently separated and marketed
  • Some farms and cooperatives in Huila, Nariño, and Cauca offer caracol lots to specialty buyers
  • Premium varies — 15–30% where specifically marketed
  • Growing interest as Colombian specialty producers diversify their offerings

Ethiopia

  • Peaberries occur naturally across all Ethiopian growing regions
  • Not systematically sorted or marketed as a separate grade in most facilities
  • Some specialty exporters have begun offering peaberry lots from Yirgacheffe and Guji as the specialty trade matures
  • High potential given the complexity of Ethiopian heirloom varieties

Brazil

  • Called "Moca" or "Mocha" beans in Brazil — a historical term less used in modern specialty trade
  • Peaberry lots from Sul de Minas and Cerrado occasionally appear in specialty markets
  • Less internationally prominent than East African peaberry
  • Brazilian peaberries tend toward the country's characteristic nut, chocolate, and low-acid profiles

Other Origins

Peaberries can be found and occasionally marketed from:

  • Guatemala and other Central American origins — small quantities in specialty lots
  • Indonesia — found in Sumatra and Sulawesi but rarely marketed separately
  • Peru — some organic cooperatives have begun sorting peaberry lots
  • Rwanda and Burundi — occasionally separated; strong underlying cup quality

In all cases, the quality of the underlying lot and processing matters far more than the peaberry designation alone.
