Overview¶
Instant (soluble) coffee was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the first commercially successful version produced by Japanese-American chemist Satori Kato in 1903. Nescafé, launched by Nestlé in 1938, became the dominant global instant coffee brand and was widely distributed to Allied troops in World War II, cementing instant coffee as a defining product of first-wave coffee culture. The convenience and shelf stability of instant coffee made it the standard household format in many countries through much of the 20th century, fundamentally shaping global coffee consumption habits.
