Coffee as Commodity

Overview

Coffee as a commodity describes the trading of coffee as an undifferentiated bulk product — priced by the pound on futures markets without reference to quality, origin, or producer — which characterised the first-wave era and continues to govern most global coffee trade today. The specialty coffee movement arose explicitly in opposition to commodity logic, seeking to price coffee on its individual quality and traceability. Commodity pricing, set by the ICE "C" contract for arabica, frequently falls below the cost of production for smallholder farmers, making price volatility a persistent structural crisis in the coffee supply chain.
