Overview

Defect identification is the skill of recognising, naming, and correctly categorising physical defects in green coffee samples during the grading process. It requires visual recognition of Category 1 defects (full black, full sour, dried cherry, fungus damage, foreign matter) and Category 2 defects (partial black, floaters, immature beans, parchment, shells), along with knowledge of their causes and cup impacts. Accurate defect identification is central to the SCA green grading system and is a core component of Q Grader examination.
