Overview¶
West Nile is Uganda's northwesternmost Robusta-growing region, centred in the Arua, Madi Okollo, and adjacent districts bordering South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Coffee is grown at altitudes of 1,000–1,300 metres on the plateau north of the Albert Nile River, under the drier, more seasonal climate of Uganda's northwest. West Nile Robusta is an established commercial origin contributing to Uganda's national export volume, though quality development infrastructure — washing stations, cooperative organisation — is less advanced than in the central Robusta or highland Arabica zones. The region has been identified as having potential for quality improvement under the UCDA's Fine Robusta programme.
Geography and Terrain¶
West Nile sub-region is located in the West Nile zone of northwestern Uganda, comprising the districts of Arua, Madi Okollo, Pakwach, Nebbi, Zombo, and adjacent areas. The terrain is plateau and low hill country at 1,000–1,300 metres — the Ugandan plateau's northern extension into the Nile basin. The climate is drier and more strongly seasonal than the equatorial belt of central Uganda, with a single main rainy season (April–October) rather than the bimodal pattern of the south. Annual rainfall averages 1,000–1,400 mm.
The Albert Nile River forms the western boundary; the South Sudan border lies to the north.
The primary communities in the West Nile coffee belt include the Madi and Lugbara peoples, for whom coffee is a longstanding smallholder crop.
Farming Systems¶
Coffee is grown by Madi, Lugbara, and other local smallholder farmers on plots of 0.5–2 ha, intercropped with food crops. The region has been historically more remote from export infrastructure than the central and eastern Uganda growing zones, though road improvements in the 2010s have reduced this disadvantage.
Cooperative organisation is developing, with UCDA extension services operating in the area.
Processing¶
Natural (dry) processing is the dominant method — cherry dried on patios or ground mats. Processing quality is variable. UCDA's Fine Robusta programme has introduced washed Robusta processing at selected sites to improve cup quality and market access.
Varieties¶
Indigenous Nganda Robusta (spreading growth habit) and Erecta types, consistent with Uganda's national Robusta mix.
Cup Profile¶
West Nile Robusta (natural): earthy, woody, full body, mild chocolate and nuts, low acidity; standard commercial Robusta character. Washed lots from quality-focused sites show cleaner, more defined chocolate and nutty notes with reduced harshness. SCA scores of 80–83 for well-processed Fine Robusta quality lots.
