Overview¶
Puno is Peru's southernmost significant coffee-growing region, situated in the eastern Andean foothills adjacent to Lake Titicaca and the Bolivian border at altitudes of 1,400–2,000 metres. Coffee cultivation is concentrated in the Sandia and San Juan del Oro districts of the Sandia Province — the yungas transitional zone between the high Altiplano and the Amazon lowlands. Puno produces lower volumes than northern Peru's major regions, with a softer, rounded cup profile that reflects its more southerly latitude and the transitional cloud forest environment. The region's most distinctive lots come from San Juan del Oro, where high-altitude smallholder production targets organic and fair-trade export channels.
Geography and Terrain¶
Puno department is dominated by the high Altiplano surrounding Lake Titicaca (3,800 m), but coffee cultivation occurs in the dramatically lower eastern flank — the yungas — in Sandia Province. The descent from the Altiplano to the Amazonian foothills is abrupt, and the Sandia and Inambari valleys channel Amazonian moisture upslope, creating a humid cloud forest environment at 1,400–2,000 metres.
The soils are Andean Ultisols and Inceptisols, humid and well-drained on the valley slopes. The southern latitude (approximately 14–15°S) places Puno at the southern edge of Peru's viable coffee-growing band. Distance from Lima and the limited road infrastructure create significant logistical challenges for coffee export.
Farming Systems¶
Puno's coffee is produced exclusively by smallholder farming families. The cooperative sector organises certification and collective export; Oro Verde Sandia and smaller cooperatives are the primary market-access structures. The isolation of the Sandia valley — remote even by Peruvian highland standards — limits the frequency of technical assistance visits and increases the cost of inputs and export logistics.
Processing¶
Washed processing is the regional standard, with cooperative wet mills serving clusters of member farms. The humid cloud forest environment requires careful management of drying to avoid mould and fermentation defects during extended patio or raised-bed drying.
Varieties¶
Typica is the dominant variety in older Puno plantings and produces the region's most characterful lots. Catimor is present in areas replanted after the 2012–2013 Roya epidemic. The small scale of the region limits varietal diversity and investment in new introductions.
Cup Profile¶
Puno washed Typica (1,600–2,000 m): mild stone fruit, caramel, light chocolate, soft acidity; medium-light body; gentle, approachable, clean. Less complex than Cajamarca; the profile is rounded and accessible, suited to certified organic and fair-trade blending contexts. Quality lots from San Juan del Oro show mild floral and citrus character at altitude. SCA 80–84 for commercial lots; 82–86 for quality specialty lots from highest-altitude sub-zones.
