Overview

Orosi is one of Costa Rica's eight ICAFE-designated coffee regions, centred on the Orosi River valley and surrounding highlands southeast of San José in Cartago province, at altitudes of 1,000–1,400 metres. The Orosi Valley is one of the most scenic in Costa Rica — an enclosed highland valley with the Orosi River, hot springs, colonial-era church ruins, and forest reserve — creating a distinctive microclimate that moderates temperature and maintains moisture relative to more exposed growing zones. The cup profile is balanced, clean, and well-structured, positioned in the mid-tier of Costa Rican specialty quality.

Geography and Terrain

The Orosi Valley is an enclosed highland bowl in Cartago province, drained by the Orosi River toward the Reventazón system. The valley walls create a protected microclimate — more moderate temperature variation and retained humidity relative to the Central Valley plateau. Coffee cultivation occupies the valley slopes between 1,000 and 1,400 metres. The Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park borders the upper growing zone, protecting the watershed and maintaining forest canopy influence on the microclimate.

The soils are Andosols from the volcanic highlands, well-drained and fertile. The Cachi hydroelectric reservoir was built in the Orosi Valley in the 1960s, and the agricultural landscape is now shaped partly by the reservoir infrastructure.

Farming Systems

Smallholder farms organised through cooperatives. CoopOrosi is the principal cooperative in the zone. The enclosed valley geography creates a relatively self-contained farming community with established infrastructure for cherry processing and transport to dry mills.

Processing

Washed processing is the standard method. CoopOrosi and smaller wet mills serve the zone. Honey processing is practiced by micro-mill operators.

Varieties

Caturra and Catuai dominate. Villa Sarchi and Sarchimor are present. The variety base is consistent with the broader Costa Rican highland pattern.

Cup Profile

Orosi washed Caturra (1,000–1,400 m): balanced, clean; mild citrus, stone fruit, caramel, light chocolate; medium acidity; medium body. The enclosed valley microclimate contributes a slightly softer, rounder profile relative to the more exposed Pacific-facing zones. A reliable, accessible mid-tier Costa Rican expression. SCA 81–85 for quality lots.
