Overview

Ngozi Province is Burundi's second-tier northern coffee-growing region, adjacent to Kayanza to the west and producing significant volumes of high-quality washed Red Bourbon Arabica from altitudes of 1,600–1,900 metres. Ngozi does not consistently reach the extreme altitude of Kayanza's best stations, but its volcanic highland soils and climate produce clean, complex specialty lots that regularly appear in Cup of Excellence results. The washing station Gahahe is among Ngozi's most internationally recognised, known for a balanced, fruit-forward profile with floral notes and consistent cleanliness.

Geography and Terrain

Ngozi Province is in northern Burundi, sharing the Congo-Nile Divide geology with Kayanza (to the east) and extending toward the DRC border (west). The terrain is steep and mountainous, with coffee cultivated on hillside slopes at 1,600–1,900 metres. Soils are volcanic Nitisols and Andisols consistent with the Albertine Rift formation across the northern highlands.

Farming Systems

Smallholder cultivation on 0.25–1 hectare plots, intercropped with banana and food crops. Cherry delivery to washing stations is the standard production pathway. Ngozi hosts a significant number of active washing stations supplying both direct-trade export channels and the national commodity market.

Processing

Fully washed processing at centralised washing stations, following the same multi-stage protocol — floatation, mechanical pulping, tank fermentation (12–24 hours), graded channel washing, extended soaking, and raised-bed drying — as Kayanza's stations.

Varieties

Red Bourbon is overwhelmingly dominant, with some Jackson (Bourbon selection). The combination of Bourbon variety and volcanic soil at 1,600–1,900 m produces a profile closely comparable to the best lots from Kayanza.

Cup Profile

Ngozi washed Red Bourbon (1,600–1,900 m): clean, balanced; red fruit (cherry, plum, strawberry), florals (rose, hibiscus), bright malic acidity, medium body, brown sugar sweetness. Closely comparable to Kayanza in good harvests; slightly rounder and less intense in average years. SCA 83–88 for quality lots.
