Overview¶
Gia Lai province in the northern Central Highlands of Vietnam is one of the country's major Robusta-producing provinces, with approximately 82,000 hectares under coffee cultivation. Located at altitudes of 600–900 metres on a broad basaltic plateau north of Dak Lak, the province produces large volumes of commercial Robusta destined primarily for export through bulk commodity channels. Gia Lai is also host to growing Arabica trial plantings in its higher-altitude zones, part of the Vietnamese government and specialty industry push to diversify production beyond commodity Robusta.
Geography and Terrain¶
Gia Lai province occupies the northern section of the Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên), bordered by Kon Tum to the north, Dak Lak to the south, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen on the eastern coast, and Cambodia to the west. The provincial capital is Pleiku, situated on the plateau at approximately 800 metres.
The terrain is a gently rolling basaltic plateau intersected by river valleys; the Ayun Pa basin in the southeastern section of the province drops to lower altitudes. Soils are the characteristic Central Highlands red basalt latosols, highly productive for Robusta.
The climate is humid tropical with a well-defined monsoon season (May–October) and dry season (November–April), broadly similar to Dak Lak.
Farming Systems¶
Gia Lai's coffee is cultivated by both Kinh settler families and indigenous Jarai and Bahnar communities. The province has a significant proportion of larger commercial farms than Dak Lak, alongside smallholder plots. Cooperative infrastructure is present but less developed than in Dak Lak.
Processing¶
Wet/washed processing is standard for commercial Robusta. Natural and semi-washed processing are practiced by specialty-oriented farms in higher-altitude zones.
Varieties¶
Robusta seedling populations dominate. Arabica trials — primarily Catimor and some Bourbon — are underway in higher-altitude north-western areas.
Cup Profile¶
Commercial Gia Lai Robusta is broadly comparable to Dak Lak: full body, high bitterness, dark chocolate, earthy. Higher-altitude lots show marginally greater complexity.
