Overview¶
Dak Nong province in the southern Central Highlands of Vietnam is a major Robusta-producing zone with approximately 135,000 hectares under coffee cultivation. Separated from Dak Lak province in 2004, Dak Nong shares similar basalt soil and climate conditions and produces high volumes of commercial Robusta for export. The province is the second-largest coffee producer in the Central Highlands by area and has grown rapidly since its administrative separation from Dak Lak.
Geography and Terrain¶
Dak Nong is located at the southern end of the Central Highlands, bordering Dak Lak to the north, Lam Dong to the east and south, and Cambodia to the west. The province sits at altitudes of 600–900 metres on the same basaltic plateau system that defines the rest of the Central Highlands. The provincial capital is Gia Nghia.
Soils are the characteristic red basalt latosols of the Central Highlands. The climate is humid tropical monsoon with a dry season from November to April.
Farming Systems¶
Dak Nong's coffee sector is dominated by smallholder Kinh settlers alongside indigenous M'nong communities. The province has seen rapid agricultural expansion since its 2004 separation from Dak Lak, with clearing of forest land for coffee cultivation creating environmental pressures.
Processing¶
Wet/washed processing is standard. Natural and semi-washed methods are practiced by a minority of producers.
Varieties¶
Robusta seedling populations dominant. Arabica trials are present in higher-altitude zones.
Cup Profile¶
Commercial Dak Nong Robusta: full body, high bitterness, dark chocolate, earthy, broadly comparable to Dak Lak. Higher-altitude lots may show marginally greater sweetness.
