Overview¶
Antioquia is Colombia's largest department by population (~6.5 million) and one of the country's most historically important coffee regions, contributing approximately 13% of national production. Coffee cultivation is concentrated on the mountains and slopes surrounding Medellín (the departmental capital) and across the western, eastern, and northern subregions at altitudes of 1,200–2,000 metres. Antioquia produces the archetypal classic Colombian profile — balanced, mild, chocolate and hazelnut, with moderate acidity — and has a strong specialty micro-lot sector in its higher-altitude municipalities.
Geography and Terrain¶
Antioquia occupies northwestern Colombia, centred on the Cordillera Central's western slope coffee country and including significant areas of the Cauca Valley fringe. Medellín sits at 1,495 metres in the Aburrá Valley. Coffee is grown across multiple subregions: the southwestern zones near Jericó and Jardín (which have developed specialty reputations), the eastern Oriente zone, the northern Bajo Cauca region, and the historic Suroeste Antioqueño (southwestern Antioquia).
Altitudes range from 1,200 to 2,000 metres. The highest-altitude specialty farms in Jericó, Jardín, and parts of eastern Antioquia produce more complex lots than the commercial average.
Farming Systems¶
Antioquia's coffee sector reflects the colonización antioqueña heritage: smallholder family ownership (1–3 ha) is the dominant model. The department has strong FNC cooperative infrastructure. Medellín hosts significant specialty café development and an active consumer market for premium Colombian origins.
Processing¶
Fully washed processing standard. Extended fermentation and experimental methods on specialty farms, particularly in the Jericó and Jardín areas.
Varieties¶
Caturra and Castillo dominant. Bourbon and Tabi on specialty farms. Gesha on premium estates in Jericó and Jardín.
Cup Profile¶
Antioquia commercial washed: medium body, mild-to-moderate acidity, chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, clean and balanced. Classic Colombian profile; approachable and versatile. SCA 82–85.
Antioquia specialty (Jericó/Jardín, higher altitude): more acidity brightness, stone fruit, florals; 85–88 SCA.
