Overview

The Adamawa Region is Cameroon's northernmost and highest-altitude continental plateau zone, where Arabica coffee cultivation exists at the southern latitudinal limit for viable commercial production. At approximately 1,000–1,400 metres on the Adamawa Plateau (the plateau surface itself sits at approximately 1,100 m), Arabica cultivation is marginal in terms of altitude and represents a transitional zone between the more favourable western highland conditions and the Sahelian north where coffee cannot grow. Production volume is small and quality is commercial-grade rather than specialty-oriented.

Geography and Terrain

The Adamawa Plateau is a high plateau in central-northern Cameroon, straddling the boundary between the forested south and the drier savannah-influenced north. The plateau surface at 1,000–1,100 metres is relatively flat compared to the deeply dissected western volcanic highlands. Coffee is grown on the plateau and in the valleys and escarpments where topography provides additional altitude.

The regional capital, Ngaoundéré, is the commercial hub and the terminus of the main railway line from Yaoundé. The zone is climatically drier than the western highlands, with more defined seasonality and lower annual rainfall.

Farming Systems

Small-scale farming families in the highland valleys and elevated areas. Production volumes are limited and the zone does not have significant export-grade cooperative infrastructure.

Processing

Farm-level washed or semi-dry processing. Quality control is limited compared to the western highland zones.

Varieties

Typica lineages are the primary genetic base; the variety and age structure are similar to the broader Cameroonian Arabica sector.

Cup Profile

Adamawa washed Arabica (1,000–1,400 m): mild, balanced; chocolate, caramel, soft acidity; medium body; commercial quality. The lower altitude compared to the western highlands produces a less complex and less defined profile. SCA 78–82 for commercial lots.

Key Facts

  • Central-northern Cameroon; Adamawa Plateau; 1,000–1,400 m altitude
  • Marginal Arabica zone at the northern limit of viable cultivation in Cameroon
  • Ngaoundéré: regional hub; railway terminus from Yaoundé
  • Small volume; commercial grade; limited specialty development
  • Profile: mild, chocolate, soft; lowest complexity in Cameroon's Arabica range
