Overview

Acatenango is one of Guatemala's most altitude-capable coffee regions, located on the slopes and valley surrounding Volcán Acatenango (3,976 m) and the adjacent Volcán de Fuego (active) in Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez departments at altitudes of 1,500–2,000 metres. The region shares geological features with Antigua (which lies in the adjacent valley), but its higher altitudes and slightly different microclimate — more temperature variation, greater altitude effect on cherry development — produce a distinctly different cup: more complex, floral, and clean than Antigua's rounder, richer profile. Acatenango has emerged as a consistent Cup of Excellence producing region and has attracted premium specialty buyer interest for its high-altitude Bourbon and Gesha lots.

Geography and Terrain

Acatenango is centred on the valley between Volcán Acatenango (a stratovolcano, partially dormant) and Volcán de Fuego (highly active; one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere). The Acatenango valley slopes rise from approximately 1,500 m on the valley floor to above 2,000 m on the upper coffee-growing zone.

The soils are young, fertile volcanic andesites and basalts, continuously renewed by Fuego's ash deposits — similar to Antigua's terroir but at higher elevation with more dramatic temperature fluctuation between day and night. This diurnal variation at altitude drives dense bean formation and flavour concentration.

Farming Systems

Acatenango is served by a mix of estates and smaller farms, with several internationally recognised specialty producers operating in the zone. The region's proximity to Antigua facilitates access to processing infrastructure and export logistics. Some of Guatemala's most progressive specialty estates have operations or sourcing relationships in the Acatenango valley.

Processing

Washed processing is the standard and the basis for the region's most celebrated lots. Clean, controlled fermentation and raised-bed drying at altitude produces the florality and precision that define Acatenango's specialty expression.

Natural and honey processing are practiced by some producers, producing fuller, fruit-forward lots that complement the washed profile.

Varieties

Bourbon is the anchor variety for premium Acatenango lots; the combination of high altitude and Bourbon genetics produces the region's characteristic floral, clean cup. Gesha is grown by several specialty-focused farms and has attracted significant international auction attention. Caturra and Catuai are present in commercial-scale plantings.

Cup Profile

Acatenango washed (Bourbon): complex, floral (jasmine, orange blossom), citrus (lemon, mandarin), peach, red apple, clean bright acidity, medium body, elegant finish. More delicate and complex than Antigua but similarly structured; the altitude-driven density and florality make Acatenango lots among Guatemala's most specialty-acclaimed. SCA 85–91 for quality lots; CoE finalists score 87–93.

Acatenango Gesha: intensely aromatic, jasmine, bergamot, tropical fruit, exceptional precision; auction-grade lots command very high prices.
