Barista Skill Progression Levels¶
Barista skills develop progressively across four levels, typically spanning two or more years of deliberate practice. Each level builds on the last, expanding technical ability, sensory acuity, knowledge, and professional responsibility. See Barista Skills Development MOC for the full framework.
Level 1: Foundation Barista (Months 1–2)¶
Practical goals: Supervised beverage preparation, consistency during quiet periods, following instructions accurately, working safely.
Level 2: Competent Barista (Months 3–6)¶
Practical goals:
Independent beverage preparation, consistent quality during busy periods, managing a rush without supervision, training new staff on basics.
Barista Level 2 Skills /Barista Level 2 Skills
Level 3: Advanced Barista (Months 6–12)¶
Practical goals:
Quality control responsibilities, opening and closing independently, training and mentoring others, contributing to menu development.
Level 4: Master Barista (Year 1+)¶
Practical goals: Shift leadership and management, training programme implementation, quality standard setting, potential competition participation, industry contribution.
