Overview

Japanese coffee aesthetics are characterised by minimalism, precision, ritual, and restraint — qualities expressed in kissaten interior design, brewing ceremony, and the presentation of coffee as a meditative practice rather than a convenience product. These aesthetics influenced the founding aesthetic of Blue Bottle Coffee and much of third-wave café design globally, as designers and roasters adopted the Japanese ideal of eliminating superfluous elements to focus attention on the quality of the coffee itself.
