Overview

Blue Bottle Coffee's founding aesthetic was shaped directly by founder James Freeman's appreciation of Japanese kissaten culture — the minimalist design, freshness obsession, and ritual precision that define Blue Bottle's brand were inspired by Japanese café traditions. When Blue Bottle expanded to Japan in 2015, the reception was exceptional, with queues forming at its first Tokyo location; the expansion was seen as a homecoming of sorts for an aesthetic originally derived from Japanese coffee culture.
