Ethiopia and Coffee

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and remains one of the world's most revered origins. With centuries of cultivation tradition, unparalleled genetic diversity, and a deep cultural connection to the plant, Ethiopian coffee represents the pinnacle of aromatic complexity and terroir expression in specialty coffee.

Why Ethiopia Matters

Coffee (Coffea arabica) originated in Ethiopia's highland forests. The country holds an estimated 10,000+ distinct coffee varieties — the most diverse gene pool anywhere — and wild coffee forests still exist in the southwest. Ethiopia consumes nearly half its own production domestically, and coffee is its largest export crop, sustaining over 15 million livelihoods.

No other origin offers the same breadth of flavour possibilities. A washed Yirgacheffe and a natural Harrar can taste like they come from different planets.
