Overview

Starbucks began in 1971 in Seattle as a coffee bean retailer inspired by Peet's Coffee, then transformed under Howard Schultz from 1987 into a global coffeehouse chain that defined the second wave by popularising espresso drinks and the "third place" coffeehouse concept. Starbucks' global expansion to over 35,000 locations made it the world's largest coffee chain and simultaneously the most significant commercial force shaping mass-market coffee consumption. Its scale both democratised espresso culture for millions of consumers and became the defining contrast against which the third-wave specialty movement positioned itself.
