Overview

The first World Barista Championship was held in 2000 in Monte Carlo, organised by the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE). The inaugural champion was Robert Thoresen of Norway, who set the tone for Nordic dominance of the competition in its early years and established the WBC as the premier platform for barista excellence globally — a role it has maintained as the primary stage on which specialty coffee techniques, equipment, and ideas are introduced to international audiences.
