Overview¶
Coffee quality and grading encompasses the physical and sensory standards used to evaluate and classify green and roasted coffee. Physical grading systems — defect counts, screen sizes, bean density, and altitude designations — vary by origin and enable international trade. Sensory evaluation via cupping and the 100-point SCA scale provides an objective measure of cup quality independent of physical grade. For origin-specific grading systems, see Coffee Qualities; for cupping methodology, see Cupping.
