Overview

The Planalto da Conquista (Conquest Plateau) is a highland coffee-growing zone in south-western Bahia state at altitudes of 700–1,100 metres, centred on the city of Vitória da Conquista. It holds a protected Indicação de Procedência (IP) geographical indication and produces structured, consistent Arabica with chocolate and mild fruit character, representing an important part of Bahia's growing coffee identity alongside the Chapada Diamantina zone. The region occupies a transitional position between the semi-arid caatinga lowlands and the cerrado highlands, with a more regular rainfall pattern than the Chapada Diamantina.


Geography and Terrain

The Planalto da Conquista occupies south-western Bahia state, centred on Vitória da Conquista (Brazil's fourth-largest city in Bahia) and extending through municipalities including Barra do Choça, Planalto, Caatiba, and Iguaí. The plateau sits at 700–1,100 metres — lower on average than the Chapada Diamantina — with gently rolling terrain suited to a degree of mechanisation.

Soils are deep red-yellow latosols developed over crystalline and metamorphic basement rocks. The climate is tropical highland with a defined dry season (Aw/Cwa), with annual rainfall of approximately 1,000–1,400 mm concentrated in the October–March wet season. The harvest period (June–September) is consistently dry and sunny.


Farming Systems

Farms in the Planalto da Conquista range from smallholder family operations (10–50 ha) to medium estates. The plateau terrain supports mechanised harvesting. The region has developed strong cooperative infrastructure, and Bahia's state government has supported specialty coffee promotion as a rural development programme.


Processing

Natural processing dominates, facilitated by the dry harvest season. Pulped natural is practiced on specialty farms. Washed processing is a minority practice.


Varieties

Catuaí (red and yellow) dominates. Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon are grown on quality farms. Rust-resistant releases (Obatã, Arara, Catucaí) are gaining adoption.


Cup Profile

Planalto da Conquista: medium-full body, low-moderate acidity, milk chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, dried stone fruit. More structured and consistent than some Bahia zones; approachable and blend-compatible. SCA scores: 81–85 for specialty lots.
