Overview¶
The Mahlkönig EK43 is an industrial barley-mill-style grinder that was rediscovered for specialty coffee use around 2013 by Australian baristas Matt Perger and Ben Kaminsky, who recognised that its large, flat burr set produced exceptionally consistent particle size distribution. Its adoption in specialty cafés and World Barista Championship competition transformed expectations for espresso and filter grind quality, and triggered a wave of grinder development industry-wide that prioritised burr geometry, motor power, and retention as key quality variables.
