Overview¶
A caffè macchiato (Italian: "stained" or "marked" coffee) is an espresso "marked" with a small amount of milk or milk foam. It is the smallest of the milk-based espresso preparations, retaining the strong, concentrated flavour and intensity of espresso while softening its edge slightly with the addition of minimal milk. It is distinct from the latte macchiato, which reverses the ratio — milk is the base and espresso is added through the foam layer.
Key Facts¶
- Standard composition: one shot of espresso with a small amount of foamed or steamed milk (typically 10–15 ml) placed on top
- The name macchiato (Italian for "stained" or "spotted") refers to the espresso being marked with milk, not the milk being marked with coffee
- Retains espresso's strong flavour and high coffee intensity — the milk addition is minimal
- Distinct from latte macchiato: in a caffè macchiato, espresso is the base; in a latte macchiato, steamed milk is the base
- Served in a standard espresso cup (60–90 ml)
