Overview

A caffè latte is an espresso-based drink combining one or two shots of espresso with a large proportion of steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam on top. It is one of the most widely ordered milk-based espresso drinks globally, characterised by its creamy texture, mild coffee intensity relative to smaller espresso-milk preparations, and large serving volume. Latte art — poured patterns created in the microfoam surface — is most commonly associated with the caffè latte due to its generous milk canvas.

Key Facts

  • Standard composition: one or two espresso shots combined with approximately 150–250 ml of steamed milk and a thin microfoam layer
  • Served in a larger cup or glass (typically 250–350 ml total volume)
  • Milk volume produces a milder, creamier coffee flavour than drinks such as the flat white or cortado
  • Latte art is most commonly demonstrated on the caffè latte due to its larger microfoam surface area
  • Distinct from the latte macchiato, in which milk is poured first and espresso added through the foam layer
