Overview¶
Mail-order specialty coffee refers to the purchase of freshly roasted coffee beans directly from roasters by post or courier, bypassing retail intermediaries. This model became commercially viable with the growth of e-commerce platforms in the 2000s and transformed the specialty market by allowing consumers in areas without quality cafés or roasteries to access freshly roasted single-origins and competition coffees. Direct-to-consumer online sales have also improved margins for small roasters and enabled them to build customer relationships independent of wholesale accounts.
