Overview

George Howell is an American specialty coffee pioneer based in Boston, widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in the development of American specialty coffee. He founded The Coffee Connection in 1975 — one of the earliest single-origin specialty retail operations in the United States — and later co-founded the Cup of Excellence programme in 1999, which became the world's most influential quality competition and green coffee auction system. The Coffee Connection

In 1975, Howell founded The Coffee Connection in Harvard Square, Boston. The shop was founded on principles that were radical for its era: single-origin coffees, light roasting to emphasise origin character, and a focus on freshness. At a time when blended, darkly roasted commercial coffee was the American standard, The Coffee Connection offered a model that prioritised transparency about provenance and flavour. The CoE model operates through a rigorous blind-cupping process: an international panel of trained judges scores coffees from a participating country; lots scoring above 86 points (on the SCA 100-point scale) enter an online auction. Winning lots have sold for extraordinary premiums — in some cases, hundreds of dollars per pound — transforming price discovery for exceptional green coffee and creating direct financial incentives for farm-level quality investment. The programme is credited with substantially raising quality standards in multiple producing countries and providing smallholder farmers with access to global specialty buyers.

Direct Trade Pioneering

Howell was among the earliest American coffee buyers to travel directly to producing farms, develop personal relationships with growers, and pay quality premiums outside the commodity market structure. This approach — later termed direct trade — influenced subsequent generations of specialty roasters, including Intelligentsia Coffee, Counter Culture Coffee, and others who built their sourcing models on direct farm engagement. Howell's early farm visits established a template for transparency in green coffee purchasing that became a defining characteristic of third-wave specialty coffee.

The company focuses on extremely high-quality single-origin coffees and has developed an unusual quality intervention: cryogenic storage of green coffee. Howell's team freeze-preserves exceptional green lots — particularly high-scoring Cup of Excellence coffees and rare micro-lots — to extend their peak flavour window beyond the typical seasonal cycle. This programme, described as preserving "terroir" in storage, represents a novel approach to green coffee ageing and quality longevity with few precedents in the broader industry.
