Overview¶
The circular economy concept applied to coffee focuses on eliminating waste throughout the value chain by keeping materials in use for as long as possible. Practical applications include composting spent coffee grounds, repurposing coffee pulp and cherry skins as cascara beverages or animal feed, recycling or eliminating single-use packaging, recovering and treating water from wet processing, and finding value in every by-product rather than treating it as waste. The approach contrasts with the linear extract-use-discard model that characterises conventional commodity coffee production and retail.
