Brew Ratio and Yield¶
Summary:: Brew ratio defines how much coffee is used relative to water; yield describes how much ends up in the cup and how much was extracted.
- Brew ratio:
- Defined as coffee mass : water mass (or beverage mass).
- Example guidelines:
- Espresso: commonly around 1:2 (e.g., 18 g in → 36 g out).
- Filter: commonly around 1:15–1:17 (e.g., 15 g in → 255 g water).
- Extraction yield:
- Approximate target range for many brews: 18–22% of the coffee mass dissolved.
- Used mainly as a tool, not a strict rule; taste is the final arbiter.
