Overview¶
A dirty chai is a chai latte — black tea brewed with a blend of warm spices and combined with steamed milk — with one or more shots of espresso added. The espresso introduces coffee bitterness, additional caffeine, and a roasted character that contrasts with the spice-forward profile of the base drink. It is offered as a standard menu item in many specialty and commercial cafés and is available in both hot and iced preparations.
Preparation¶
A dirty chai is prepared by adding one or two espresso shots to a freshly made chai latte. The underlying chai latte is prepared either from a chai concentrate — pre-brewed spiced black tea with sweetener — or from scratch using black tea, ground spices (typically cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and black pepper), and milk, steeped and strained before steaming. The espresso shots are typically added to the cup before the steamed chai-milk mixture, or poured in afterwards depending on café preference. A double dirty chai uses two espresso shots.
Flavour Profile¶
The flavour profile combines two distinct components. The chai base is sweet, spiced, and aromatic, with cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger dominating, and a slight tannin character from the black tea. The espresso addition is bitter, roasted, and concentrated, contributing depth and body. The espresso and chai components do not fully integrate — the drink retains distinct spice and coffee layers — which is characteristic of the style. Milk steamed to approximately 65°C softens both components and contributes sweetness and body.
Variations¶
| Variation | Description |
|---|---|
| Double dirty chai | Two espresso shots added |
| Iced dirty chai | Chai over ice with cold-pulled espresso or cold brew |
| Oat milk dirty chai | Plant milk substitute; oat milk complements the spice profile |
