Coffee Educator / Workshop Facilitator¶
A Coffee Educator or Coffee Workshop Facilitator designs and delivers structured learning experiences that build coffee knowledge and practical skills. They operate across a wide range of contexts — from accredited SCA training centres and roastery academies to public consumer workshops, corporate team-building events, and hospitality onboarding programmes.
Role Overview¶
Coffee education has grown into a distinct professional discipline as the specialty coffee industry has matured. Educators may work in-house for a roaster or café group, independently as freelance facilitators, or within formally accredited training providers. The role demands both deep subject matter expertise and the pedagogical skill to translate complex technical knowledge into accessible, engaging learning experiences for diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities¶
- Designing training curricula for barista, brewing, sensory, and roasting subjects
- Delivering hands-on workshops, classroom sessions, and one-on-one coaching
- Assessing learner competency and providing structured feedback
- Developing educational materials — workbooks, recipe cards, sensory lexicons, slide decks
- Facilitating accredited SCA examinations and assessments
- Running consumer workshops such as brewing masterclasses, cupping sessions, and origin tastings
- Adapting content for diverse audiences — novice consumers, experienced baristas, and corporate clients
- Staying current with industry developments, research, and best practices
Skills and Knowledge¶
- Expert-level practical skills across espresso, filter, and alternative brewing methods
- Deep knowledge of Coffee Sensory Evaluation, Coffee Roasting, and Green Coffee
- Adult learning principles and facilitation techniques
- Strong verbal communication, public speaking, and group management skills

Qualifications and Pathways¶
- SCA Coffee Skills Programme — Barista Skills, Brewing, Sensory, Green Coffee, Roasting (all at Professional or Trainer level)
- SCA Authorised Trainer (AT) or Authorised SCA Campus status for delivering accredited courses
- Q Grader Certification — highly respected credential for sensory-focused educators
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) — required in Australia for nationally recognised training delivery
- Barista competition experience (e.g., World Barista Championship) is a strong professional credential
