AeroPress¶
AeroPress Innovative manual coffee brewer invented by Alan Adler (2005). Combines immersion, pressure, and filtration. Plastic chamber, plunger, and filter cap. Versatile, portable, fast brewing. Cult following in coffee community. Inventor & History Alan Adler: Engineer, inventor (Aerobie flying disc). Wanted faster, cleaner brew than French press. Launched 2005, rapid specialty coffee adoption. World AeroPress Championship started 2008. Over 2 million sold globally. Design Components Chamber (Brew Chamber) Large syringe-like cylinder. Numbered markers (1-4) for measuring. Holds coffee and water during brewing. Polypropylene plastic (BPA-free). Original chamber capacity: ~250ml. Plunger Fits inside chamber, creates seal. Rubber gasket maintains pressure. Creates gentle pressure during pressing (~0.5-0.75 bar, much less than espresso). Handle on top for pressing. Filter Cap Screws onto chamber bottom. Holds filter in place. Perforated to allow water through. Standard cap uses paper filters. Third-party metal filter options available. Filter Paper micro-filters (proprietary size). Much finer than coffee filters. Removes oils and sediment. Clean, paper-filtered taste. Metal filter alternatives preserve oils (different character). Reusable filters available. Funnel Accessory for adding grounds to chamber. Prevents spills. Included with AeroPress. Simple but useful. Stirrer Paddle for agitating grounds during brewing. Included accessory. Can use spoon instead. Ensures even saturation. Standard Method (Original) Setup 1. Insert paper filter in cap 2. Rinse filter with hot water 3. Attach cap to chamber 4. Place chamber on mug (filter-side down) 5. Add coffee to chamber through funnel Brewing Steps 1. Add 15-20g medium-fine ground coffee 2. Pour 200-220ml water (80-85°C) 3. Stir for 10 seconds 4. Insert plunger, pull up slightly (creates seal) 5. Wait 1:00-1:30 total time 6. Press slowly over 20-30 seconds 7. Stop when hissing starts 8. Remove, eject grounds puck Variables - Coffee: 15-20g typical - Water: 200-240ml (dilute to taste) - Grind: Medium to medium-fine - Temperature: 80-85°C standard (lower than most methods) - Time: 1:00-2:00 total - Pressure: Gentle, steady press Inverted Method Why Inverted Standard method starts dripping immediately. Inverted method allows longer immersion without dripping. More control over brew time. Popular competition technique. Slightly riskier (can spill). Inverted Setup 1. Insert plunger 1-2cm into chamber (seal created) 2. Chamber upside-down (plunger on bottom) 3. Add coffee to open top 4. Add water 5. Stir 6. Steep desired time 7. Attach filter cap 8. Flip onto mug carefully 9. Press Inverted Advantages - Full immersion control (no dripping) - Longer steep time possible - Better for bloom phase - Competition standard Inverted Risks - Potential spilling during flip - Requires care and practice - Filter cap must be very secure - Hot water safety concern AeroPress Characteristics Brew Time Fastest manual method (1-3 minutes total). Much faster than French press (4+ minutes) or pour-over (3-4 minutes). Convenience factor significant. Pressure Creates gentle pressure (~0.5-0.75 bar). NOT espresso pressure (9 bar). Marketing originally called it "espresso," but it's really not. Pressure aids extraction but doesn't define method. Versatility Incredibly flexible method: - Diluted or concentrated - Fast or slow brewing - Cold brew possible - Multiple recipes exist - Different filters (paper, metal) - Works with various grinds Flavor Profile Depends heavily on recipe. Generally: Clean (paper filter), full-bodied, smooth. Low bitterness (short contact, lower temp). Balanced extraction. Origin characteristics expressed clearly. Portability Compact, lightweight (~300g). Plastic construction (durable, won't break). Requires no electricity. Perfect for: travel, camping, office, backpacking. Components nest together. AeroPress Recipes Classic (Manufacturer) 17g coffee, 220ml water, 80°C. Standard method. 10-second stir, 1:00 steep, 20-second press. Dilute to taste. Balanced, approachable. James Hoffmann Ultimate Competition-inspired technique. 11g coffee, 200ml water, 95°C. Inverted, 2-minute steep, gentle swirl instead of stir, slow press. Clean, complex. YouTube famous. Concentrate + Dilute Strong ratio (1:5-1:8), then dilute. 30g coffee, 150ml water. Press, then add 100-150ml water. Creates Americano-like brew. Adjustable strength. Cold Brew AeroPress Cold water, 12-24 hour steep in fridge. Press cold. Fast cold brew method. Less volume than traditional cold brew but quick alternative. Competitions & Community World AeroPress Championship (WAC) Annual competition since 2008. Participants create unique recipes. Judged blind by panel. Winner crowned world champion. Celebrates creativity and community. Recipe Innovation Thousands of published recipes. Coffee community sharing variations. WAC drives innovation. No "correct" method - experimentation celebrated. AeroPress Community Devoted following in specialty coffee. Forums, groups, recipe databases. Friendly, experimental culture. Low barrier to entry. Advantages - Fast brewing (1-3 minutes) - Portable and durable - Easy cleanup (puck ejects) - Forgiving technique - Affordable ($30-40) - Versatile recipes - Clean cup (paper filter) - Single serve convenient Limitations - Small capacity (1-2 cups max) - Plastic construction (some prefer metal/glass) - Requires some technique for consistency - Filter cost ongoing (paper filters) - Not impressive/aesthetic (purely functional) AeroPress Accessories Fellow Prismo Pressure-actuated valve attachment. No-drip seal. Creates espresso-like pressure. Reusable metal filter. Enables pressure profiling. Metal Filters Reusable stainless steel filters. Preserve coffee oils. Fuller body than paper. Various brands (Able, Altura, Kaffeologie). Environmental benefit. AeroPress Go Travel version (2019). Includes mug/lid. Smaller capacity (~230ml). Compact design. Specifically for portability. AeroPress XL Larger version (2023). Double capacity (500ml). 2-3 servings. Same method, bigger scale. For multi-cup brewing. AeroPress Clear Glass-like transparent version (2023). Same function, premium aesthetic. Tritan material (shatterproof). Higher price point ($50-60).
