Overview

The San Francisco Bay Area is the historical centre of American specialty coffee, anchored by Alfred Peet's founding of Peet's Coffee in Berkeley in 1966 — an event widely credited with inspiring the original Starbucks founders — and the later establishment of Blue Bottle Coffee in Oakland in 2002 and Ritual Coffee Roasters. The region's high concentration of technology industry workers helped drive early mainstream adoption of third-wave coffee values and enabled significant venture investment in specialty coffee businesses.
